Frequently Asked Questions
Who owns African Clean Energy (ACE)?
African Clean Energy or ACE as we call ourselves is owned by its founding team, along with Netherlands-based private investors Phase2Earth, MolGen and SRA. For more information on our team, check out our about page.
Is ACE a for profit company?
ACE is indeed a for-profit for-good company. This was a conscious decision when starting the company because we felt that as a company no one needs to sacrifice the mission for money. They both can be done harmoniously. The greater change a company can help achieve is directly related to the success level of said company.
Is ACE a B-Corp?
ACE is proud to be the highest ranked B Corp in Europe and the number 2 highest scoring B-Corp in the world. In 2022, with a score of 179.8 points, ACE was honored to be chosen as “Best For The World: Customers” and “Best For The World: Workers.” You can view the latest overview of our score on the B-Corp website here.
In which markets does ACE operate?
ACE currently operates in 4 emerging markets: Uganda, Kenya, Lesotho and Cambodia, with hopes to expand further within Sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia in the coming years.
Does ACE manufacture the cookstoves?
Yes, we manufacture our ACE One systems directly. ACE believes in local manufacturing, and has set up factories in Lesotho, Uganda and Cambodia. This helps keep our own footprint low as well as deepen our investment in our local communities.
Aside from providing improved hardware, does ACE also help support a switch towards cleaner fuels?
Yes, one of our big goals is to help switch our end-users away from the use of unsustainable fuels for cooking like charcoal and firewood towards sustainably sourced biomasses like briquettes or pellets which are locally produced with wood- or agri-residues. Currently, ACE is working to provide more efficient fuel delivery services to our customers. By making fuel distribution more convenient and easier for our end-users, we are able to help stimulate sustainable and clean energy use while at the same time invigorating the local economy.
Are ACE carbon offsets classed as emission avoidance?
Yes. Households with inadequate access to energy use (unsustainable) fuels like firewood and charcoal very inefficiently, and the ACE One greatly improves on that efficiency. If the customer also makes a switch to sustainable fuels like briquettes/pellets made from wood- or agri-waste, the gains increase further.
To be specific, the ACE One itself can avert CO2 emissions by 2 to 5 tonnes per year. When paired with clean fuel, the potential of carbon offsetting increases to up to 10 tonnes per year, especially in regions where charcoal usage is prevalent. We see this as a great tool for directing carbon finance into communities to help pay for the energy transition.
How is the ACE avoidance credit calculated?
Our emission reductions of an ACE One user is calculated in regards to the fan activity and fuel purchase history (fuel switch). Together they form the proxies for the total carbon offset. For a more detailed dive into our calculations please contact us for a look at our carbon manifesto document.
Is ACE a certified project?
We are currently in the process of obtaining Gold Standard certification for this new data-underwritten way of working.
