African clean energy
ACE is headquartered in Amsterdam, our flagship factory is in Lesotho, and we have a growing team of 100+ full-time employees active in Lesotho, Cambodia and Uganda. We are operating in the following locations:
Lesotho is ACE’s home market. We have been operating there since 2014. Our headquarters in Lesotho are located in the capital city of Maseru, though we are operating in four other locations across Lesotho. Maseru is also the location of our flagship factory where we have been manufacturing the ACE 1 since 2014.
Uganda is the most recent market in which ACE has begun operating. We are headquartered in the city of Mbale in Eastern Uganda where we began operating in 2017. In 2019, we opened our second branch in Uganda in Gulu in the north. We plan to begin manufacturing in Uganda in 2021.
ACE has been operating in Cambodia since 2016. Our headquarters in Cambodia is located in the town of Siem Reap in the north of the country. We also have operations set up in the capital city, Phnom Penh. We are currently in the process of setting up our second worldwide factory in Siem Reap in order to expand our distribution in South East Asia. We expect to commence our manufacturing there in March 2020.
American consumers can purchase the ACE 1 to serve as a portable stove to use camping or in the outdoors. In doing so, they are supporting ACE’s mission to provide a clean energy solution to off-grid consumers in the developing world.
We are committed to maximising the benefits we offer to the local communities we operate in. A big part of this is local manufacturing.
Made in Africa
We are proud to say that the ACE 1 is made in Africa, for Africans, and we plan to continue down this path by developing new facilities in the other markets in which we operate.
Our flagship factory is based in Maseru, Lesotho. We employ 35 staff on the production line, and an additional 30 in admin and sales roles. With this format, the plant’s current capacity is 3000 ACE 1 units per month. The factory is designed to be heavily reliant on human capital to bring opportunities for local employment.
We maintain a 50% gender split in all our operations, and 20% of factory positions are filled by individuals with disabilities.
African clean energy
We distribute directly to customers by building last-mile distribution channels in the developing world. These can facilitate remote households to gain access not only to the ACE 1, but also to maintenance services, financial support and clean fuels.
ACE distributes directly B2C in Lesotho, Cambodia and Uganda. We employ in-house sales teams to travel to often rural communities and demonstrate the functions of the product in an informal setting.
Priced at $120+, the ACE 1 is made available to most customers on a 12-15 micro-loan. Loans are managed internally by ACE, and repayments are facilitated by the significant energy savings that customers achieve by using the product. With this model, ACE can successfully give $2-a-day people access to a $100+ product.
Building a Network of Retail Locations
Our current focus is on building a matching physical infrastructure of mobile retail shops that can allow our customer base to have continuous access to clean energy products and services. We opened the first official ACE shopfront in 2017, in Mbale, Uganda. In the next 3 years, as part of a project co-funded by the European Union, we are setting up 25 mobile energy shops in remote areas of Lesotho.
The ACE Connect app provides customers with a direct channel of communication with our on-the-ground customer support services. It also enables customers to keep track of their loan status. With its updated ‘smart’ technology, the ACE 1 can be switched on or off remotely. This can be done in a situation where a customer has missed their loan repayment. Rather than risking the customer defaulting, the ACE 1 will simply switch off until such time as the customer has made their next payment. This helps us to remove some of the risk surrounding customer loans and and thus continue to provide them to customers interest-free.
